Kim and Dorn submitted a video entry to share their story…
Why do we deserve to win?
Our parents deserve to win this free wedding film.
[Kim] Our parents have worked so hard to raise us to who we are today and we want them to be able to relax and enjoy themselves. My parents were divorced by the time I was 1. God blessed me with the most wonderful step-father! My mother has been battling an illness for over 7 years now and my biological father lost his battle to cancer last year. My mother had to give up her career to stay home on disability so money just isn’t there like it used to be so Dorn and I are footing the bill for the wedding. Everyone keeps telling us to have a small wedding to help with expenses but there is just no way when the both of us have huge families and not to mention tons of friends. We don’t want to leave anyone out of one of the most important days of our lives!
[Dorn] My parents have been through so much to get my family to where we are today. My parents were living in Laos during the 1970’s when communism was prominent. My parents, along with my grandparents literally had to sneak out of the country and seek refuge in the United States in 1980. My parents knew little to no English and started off with practically nothing but the clothes on their backs. Through their hard work and determination, they have given my brother, three sisters, and me a great life.
When I think to myself of why we “deserve” to win, its hard for me to think of anything else but our parents. Both sets of our parents have gone through so much to raise us and make us who we are today. This wedding video would be more of a gift to them. Our parents are the ones who have had to take risks and suffer in an effort to provide their children with a good life.
Why a videographer is important to us:
Having a wedding videographer is important to us because we want to be able to capture every aspect and moment that occurs. We realize that this day and opportunity only happens once. We want our wedding video to bring back every single memory of our wedding day, from the taste of our cake to the last dance. We want to be able to remember every emotion, from seeing each other for the first time to hugging our parents.
Something interesting:
My parents have never had a wedding. In Laos, both my parents were poor and could not afford a wedding. Even 28 years later they have never had a formal wedding or exchanged vows. I want to be able to give them an opportunity to formally exchange vows and to have a “real” wedding. We want to surprise them with their own mini wedding during ours. This is definitely still in concept stage but is something I really want to do for my parents.
Song to capture the essence of our wedding:
Must Be Dreaming – Frou Frou
Must be Dreaming (Frou Frou) Music Video
Lyrics:
Pay close attention
Don’t listen to me from now
George’ll be flying this one
And it’s anyone’s guess how he does this
Is the right turn wrong
Universe taking me in full bloom
Fireball careful with that there
See what you made me do
I must be dreaming
Or we’re onto something
I must be dreaming
For i don’t fall in love lawlessly
I must be dreaming
Or pinch me to waking
So undeniably yours
As long as i’m losing it so completely
Incendiary glance
Be come and collide in me
Zoom in enhance hold
While i go helplessly sky high
Magic eye sugar rushing don’t stop
I must be dreaming
Or we’re onto something
Hey just watcha make me
For i don’t fall in love lawlessly
I must be dreaming
Or pinch me to waking
So undeniably yours
As long as i’m losing it so completely
Euphoria i can’t take any more of
Yah i’m losing it
We asked some of our friends and family to share their thoughts:
“My favorite memory was the evening we all went to dinner together for the first time. Ben [Kim’s biological dad] was so nervous about it, he knew from the way Kim talked about Dorn that he was special to her. He felt really good about the two of them after seeing them together. Not surprised at all! Could see it coming! In a word, happy. In a phrase, meant to be. If I could pick a man I would want Kim to love, I don’t think I could pick any better. I think the world of both of them and am blessed to have them in my life”
- Becky Meissen, Kim’s step-mother
“If I had to describe Kim and Dorn’s relationship in a phrase, it would be ‘opposites attract.’ Kim and Dorn are both absolutely amazing people and their differences always seem to complement one another perfectly. Kim is usually early and Dorn likes to be fashionably late. Kim is a planner and Dorn is a little more spontaneous. Kim and Dorn together are the perfect couple that plans to show up right on time and are always ready for whatever spontaneity comes their way. Kim and Dorn’s relationship is a wonderful example of what true love is and there is not another couple that deserves a more perfect wedding.”
- Aubrey Cornell, Friend of couple
“Dorn and Kim are the “fun couple”. They are adventurous and share many of the same hobbies. It’s always fun to be around the two of them because they just make you smile. They are a fun-loving couple who will take on the world together!”
- Heather Smith, Friend of couple
“While I’ve only known Dorn and Kim as a couple for about a year now, I’ve known Kim since we were little girls, and I’ve never seen anyone make her as happy as Dorn does. Kim and I have been a big part of each other’s lives since about the second grade, and we have shared so many experiences together. She is a wonderful person and deserves the
best in life, and now she has the best, in her relationship with Dorn. My husband and I were lucky enough to get to spend some vacation time with the happy couple in San Francisco recently, and I’ll always remember our day on Pier 39, in China Town, and on the Trolley Cars. We had a blast! They have that spark that soon-to-be wed couples have, and that excitement spreads to other couples around them. I have no doubt that they are perfect for each other and will stand the test of time.”
- Lindsey Austin, friend of couple
“As one of Kim’s grandmas, I know this is a “match made in heaven”. Dorn and Kim simply fit together. It is obvious how they love and care about one another and how both families are pleased and excited about this union. Dorn has taken me under his wing and I am “Grandma Carol” to him. It is wonderful to see both of them so much in love.”
- Grandma Carol
